Students at Summer Camp 2007
"[...] We made artificial arteries by mixing a solution of gelatin and agar. Although my model artery had an overdose of the agar, it actually worked quite well because most of the others dissolved into shivering globules." - Haluk A.
During this camp, students became a part of a medical team dedicated to a difficult task and wonderful new challenge. A local star athlete had a damaged joint and traditional attempts at repair were unable to restore him to peak performance. Students worked in teams to go where no surgeon has gone before and attempted to fabricate NEW tissue to replace the athlete’s damaged joint.
"During the course of [...] three days, we did various experiments ranging from exposing yeast cells to smoke, creating artificial blood veins, to making “gels” for DNA samples. Some of the more memorable experiences were a table catching fire during an ill-fated experiment, and a tour of the McGowan Institute where we were permitted to watch a scientist dissect rats, removing their esophagi." - Leyla A.
