Now you know...

Biotechnology defined...

In its purest form, the term "biotechnology" refers to the use of living organisms or their products to modify human health and the human environment (Pamela Peters, from Biotechnology: A Guide to Genetic Engineering.  Wm. C. Brown Publishers, Inc., 1993).

Allegheny Biotechnology Workforce Collaborative (ABWC): Project Overview

The goal of the ABWC is to advance the life sciences research community in western Pennsylvania through the initiation of innovative education and workforce development programs developed through a collaborative effort of the region’s leading non-profit research institutions.

Collaborators include:

— Allegheny General Hospital
— Community College of Allegheny County
— Pittsburgh Tissue Engineering Initiative
— Northside Leadership Conference

Step 1 – Identify the Challenge

While the biotechnology and life sciences industry has become one of Pittsburgh’s primary economic forces, a major challenge to its further growth is a shortage of skilled biotech technicians to meet the demands.

Step 2 – Identify the Solution

A solution to this shortage is the development of innovative programs that attract and train segments of the region’s workforce that, for a myriad of reasons, may not consider or have an opportunity to enter the biotechnology research industry.

Program Details

This program is designed for men and women interested in laboratory work. These participants will acquire technical skills including tissue culture, sterile techniques, and DNA/protein protocols. To meet the needs for skilled workers in the biotechnology industry we will provide training for varying levels of technical skills (tissue culture, sterile technique, DNA/protein protocols) for those interested in laboratory employment, whether they are in the biotechnology industry, medical, or academic research institution.

Upon successful completion of the program, students will:

— Prepare lab reagents and conduct experiments with minimum sources of error using basic instruments and math skills.
— Explain the principles and practices of biotechnology.
— Work effectively in cooperative teams in a lab setting to design and complete experiments.
— Analyze and report laboratory findings using both oral and written communication skills.
— Evaluate societal issues and implications of biotechnology.
— Earn an Associates Degree in Biotechnology.

Who Is Eligible?
