Congratulations, Ishan!

Ishan Chatterjee, Fox Chapel Area High School The Pittsburgh Regional Science and Engineering Fair (PRSEF) celebrated its 72nd year of open competition of research projects in the fields of science, mathematics, and engineering on April 1-2, 2011 at Heinz Field. This competition was open to all students in grades 6-12 from the 26 counties within Western Pennsylvania and West Virginia. The Science Fair has been a Pittsburgh tradition since 1940. It is also the third oldest science fair in the United States under the affiliation of Society for Science and the Public, which facilitates the International Science and Engineering Fair. More than 1,000 students from 107 schools in Pennsylvania and 1 county in Maryland competed for over $1M in cash prizes and scholarships.

Ishan Chatterjee, Fox Chapel Area High School, was a PRSEF winner who advanced to the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair (ISEF), May 8-13, 2011 in Los Angeles, California. At ISEF, Ishan won a Second Place Grand Award of $1,500 in Cellular and Molecular Biology for his project Novel Role of BAT3 in Regulation of Basal Macroautophagy.

The international competition attracted more than 1,500 students from 65 countries, regions, and territories showcased their independent research and competed for more than $4 million in awards and scholarships. ISEF is the worlds largest and the premier international pre-college science competition for students in grades 9-12. It is a program of Society for Science & the Public.

Ishan also won PRSEF sponsor awards from the Allegheny County Medical Society Foundation, the Allegheny-Singer Research Institute at AGH, in addition to PTEI/McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine. He also received affiliate sponsor awards from the BioGENEius Challenge and the U.S. Army, as well as an Associate Scientist Perseverance Award.
