Teacher Professional Development Summer Research Experience


Formerly called the Teacher Education Program, the PTEI Summer Research Experience for middle and high school teachers recognizes the need to generate teacher catalysts who possess the requisite knowledge and tools to excite and educate students.

“Master” teachers selected into the program work for a 5-week summer period in the laboratories of established, NIH-funded, tissue engineering researchers in PTEI-supported institutions. In turn, these teachers fulfill their roles as catalysts by conducting workshops at local, regional and national teacher conferences, and contributing to the development of standards-based curricula materials.

A Shaler teacher is bringing her research into her classroom and classrooms all over the world through her involvement with the Pittsburgh Tissue Engineering Initiative. Jade Leung, a physics and biology teacher at Shaler Area High School, lends her science knowledge and research to the PTEI Summer Research Experience and was a master teacher the 2008 Summer.
